According to the American Psychological Association in 2005 43% of adults suffer adverse health affects from stress.  They go on to say that 2/3 of all office visits to family physicians are due to stress-related symptoms.  Lastly, they point out that stress is linked to the 6 leading causes of death—heart disease, cancer, lung disease, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver, and suicide.


Fortunately, there are actions to take to get that strength, vigor, and life back that you once had.  Stop ignoring yourself, and take back your youth.  We know now from the research that if we neglect the stress in our lives…it can lead to any of those 6 leading causes of death.  So, lets look at some ways that you can eliminate stress in your life.


4 Types of Stress


First of all we need to identify where stress comes from.  It is all around us.  Stress comes in 4 basic forms; Physical, Emotional, Chemical, and Thermal (temperature).  All of these stresses affect us in different ways and we need to be aware how they do.

Physical stress can be something that is hard and fast, such as an automobile accident or a slip or fall.  It can also be something that is repetitive such as typing at a keyboard, working on the line, loading and unloading boxes all day…I’m sure you get the point here.  Your body will be affected in the forms of arthritis, degenerative diseases, and even disability.  How many physical stresses do you have and how do you deal with them?

Emotional Stress comes in many forms as you know.  Some of the most common are death, depression, divorce, and financial.  When we have emotional stress, our bodies have reactions of physiology (such as increased blood pressure, or internal bleeding) and behavior (yelling, crying, etc).  If we are not careful to battle these, these will suck the life right out of you, literally.  There are many studies that show the connection between how we “feel” emotionally and our state of health and our longevity.  What are you doing to create your healthy emotional state?

Chemical stresses are everywhere including the air that we breathe in.  The chemicals that I focus on are the ones that we have control over which are the foods and drinks we put into our bodies.  We all know that drinking alcohol and smoking will cause extreme stress on our bodies creating many diseases.  But, one that people often ignore is the FOOD that you eat on a daily basis.  Do you know what foods actually cause stress in your body?  You can actually decrease stress by making sure that you are eating non-stressful food!  So, pay attention closely to your diet and you will see your stress levels reduce significantly.

Thermal stresses are the stresses that we have the least control over, especially in Ohio.  We know that the weather is constantly changing, and this can cause havoc on our bodies.  The best way to battle this is by just using common sense on protecting yourself against the heat or the cold.
